Hamlet

Prince Hamlet is having a rough time. His father has died, and his mother has quickly married his father’s slimy brother, effectively robbing him of his inheritance. Worse yet, the ghost of his father appears in the night to inform Hamlet that he was killed by his brother, Hamlet’s uncle.

What would you do? Trust the word of a ghost and avenge your father’s death? What if the ghost is simply an agent of Satan tempting you to revenge in order to damn your eternal soul? Who do you trust when all your oldest friends seem intent on cozying up to the new king, your uncle? Faced with this enormous weight of responsibility and misery, would you carry on or give up and end your own life?

Explore these and more questions with us in our inaugural production of Hamlet. Cut down to 90 minutes with no intermission, this show will feature a cast of seven actors playing all the roles in William Shakespeare’s most famous tragedy.

Audience Reviews:

“Elsewhere Shakespeare’s Hamlet was nothing short of a roller coaster. Every dip and turn had me on the edge of my seat. Their stripped-down, bare-bones approach created a world in which anything was possible. One of the most imaginative pieces of theater I’ve seen in a long while.”
— CONSTANCE SWAIN, AMERICAN SHAKESPEARE CENTER
“I have never read or been to a Shakespeare performance before, but somehow this experience felt familiar. Whether it was the props hidden under chairs, the contagious energy of the performers, or the many moments of surprise, this performance felt just like I was a 16-year-old kid at my first punk rock show in a basement. It moved me in no small way, and for that I am grateful.”
— MATT JOHNSON, RICHMOND AUTHOR
“Elsewhere Shakespeare’s Hamlet silenced that little voice that sometimes whispers, ‘What’s the point of seeing a play nowadays?’ or ‘Hasn’t this been put on enough already?’ The cast, led by Hilary Dennis as an energetic Prince of Denmark who kept the audience on the edge of their seats, guided those in attendance through an hour and a half of introspection, a little madness, and murder at Elsinore. This fast-paced, intimate performance without a traditional stage proved that we can still find common ground with the works of Shakespeare and should never stop reimagining them with a fresh perspective.”
— ZOA SABERHAGEN, LOCAL WRITER
“Elsewhere Shakespeare is a new breed of Bard. This company is young, smart, fresh, surprising, and dares to try what others haven’t or won’t. Their spirit of “Play it Fast and Loose” puts Shakespeare firmly back in the realm of unstuffy popular entertainment—its true origins—without a bit of dumbing down. Elsewhere = Everybody. It’s Shakespeare for us. All of us.”
— DR. JAN POWELL, FORMER ARTISTIC DIRECTOR AT RICHMOND SHAKESPEARE, LAKE TAHOE SHAKESPEARE, AND TYGRES HEART SHAKESPEARE COMPANY
“Elsewhere Shakespeare’s debut performance of Hamlet had a successful one-night run at The Hof, attended by an overflowing house. Working together with seasoned veterans and newcomers alike over a seven-day rehearsal period, Elsewhere pulled together an accessible and entertaining take Shakespeare’s complex script, cleverly supplementing their action with collaborative sound effects and ensemble-based staging. Their energy is palpable as they take on the challenge of imbibing Shakespearean text with their punk, DIY aesthetic. I look forward to seeing what they do next. Welcome to the RVA stage!”
